The group of Dr. Paivi Pihlajamaa at the Faculty of Medicine, University of Helsinki, is seeking to recruit a highly motivated individual for a position of

POST-DOCTORAL RESEARCHER / PHD STUDENT IN CANCER BIOLOGY

The position is available from 1st October 2023 in an Academy of Finland -funded project that investigates the interplay of metabolic reprogramming, epigenetic regulatory landscape, and cancer cell proliferation.

The group is working in the field of cancer biology and epigenetics using state-of-the-art methods such as CRISPR-Cas9 genome editing and transcriptional and epigenomic profiling at single-cell resolution (see e.g., Pihlajamaa et al, Nat Biotech 2023). We utilize diverse cellular models and next-generation sequencing techniques to understand the molecular mechanisms controlling oncogenic gene expression programs and cancer growth. The group belongs to the Applied Tumor Genomics Program in the Research Programs Unit of the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Helsinki (https://www.helsinki.fi/en/faculty-of-medicine/research/research-programs-unit/applied-tumor-genomics-atg), providing a vibrant research environment and high-quality infrastructure for modern biomedical research.

Qualifications

  • A PhD / MSc degree in life sciences with excellent academic record

  • Working knowledge of biochemistry, molecular biology, and mammalian cell culture

  • Ability to work productively both independently and as part of a team

  • Excellent communication skills in English

In addition, previous experience in CRISPR/Cas9-mediated genome editing and next-generation sequencing-based functional genomics methods and/or computational analysis of genomic datasets is considered a plus, and candidates with proven track record with at least one first-author publication will be given preference.

Details of the position

The salary will be based on the salary system for teaching and research personnel in Finnish universities, and will be depending on the appointee’s qualifications and experience.
